I'm considering getting a guitar with a floyd rose.  This I mostly because I want an ESP and most of their strat shaped guitars have them.  I would just buy an ESP without one, but I don't like the way most of the models without floyds look.  I'm just wondering if their are simple modifications that can make the floyd fixed or if by setting it up so you can only push down will prevent the guitar from going out of tune if you break a string.  Any help would be appreciated.

The floyd rose can be tricky to set up but once set up its pretty much golden

You can block the trem if you want you can buy kits that actually do that they go in the space between the tremolo and the body and it prevents from whammying

i have a floyd rose and its really sweet for playing but is horrible for 2 things.
1. can't tune down, bridge just falls back
2. break 1 string, no more playing for you.

You can block off the trem, I've seen people use a piece of wood or pennies glued together.  You can set up a floyd to dive only, but blocking is a better bet.
I'd have to see the non floyd bridges on the esp's but you could buy a standard trem model and look online for a replacement bridge that looks cool.  I think www.allparts.com might be a good place to search.

but I don't like the way most of the models without floyds look.

You'll soon learn the dependability of a fixed brige out weighs any issues of how they look. I've never liked floating bridges of any kind so I'm kinda biased.

Not true buds you can lower tune
I have a Dean Warbird and its tuned to drop B and it can still do Dime Squeals you just got to adjust the spring tension on the floyd and if you get into my tuning for example you will have to take a spring off the floyd rose this whole entire process takes about 10 minutes but you are right on the string break it completely fucks you up

I am going to add to this old thread.  Google Tremol-No for blocking trems, looks like an awesome system.

You know what's easier? Buying a fixed bridge to begin with.

Oh I agree, but some people might like being able to switch between the two.

Also Floyd Rose is bad if your songs are in multiple tunings (ex one song is in standard the other is in drop D) you would have to buy another guitar or two and that can cost quite a bit but if you break a single string your fucked for the night but its just a lot easier to get a fixed bridge. or just get it blocked then it saves you money!

I kept my Floyd floating on my ESP MH-1000 because it is a good Floyd unlike the licensed one on my Dean.  As long as you use good strings, take care of them and know when to change them you should rarely be breaking strings...

As for blocking it, I had my Dean Dime-O-Flame blocked off with just a piece of wood.  Works just fine.

i used pennies taped up with elecrtical tape on both sides of the underside of the bridge. It worked well. For me Floyd Rose trems were cool for about a week. Then the tuning issues arise and it's just a lot of fucking around. I've since switched to fixed bridges.

The ZR tremolo that ibanez uses at least has enough play in the low e string fine tuning to go from drop d to standard without having to retune the guitar, and you don't have to fuck with wtih springs. Its got a rolling dial on the back to adjust the string tension. Far superior than the Floyd IMO

I saw this video a while back. Thought it was pretty good. Especially the bit around 2:53. that trick saved me hours with full string changes on Floyd Rose guitars, and helped set them up really easy/quick.
