Quote from: from today's LP
Stillseed working hard in hopes of making it big

Emmet Matheson, The Leader-Post
Published: Thursday, June 01, 2006

Stillseed (with Chemical Horizon & Midnight Effect)
Friday
The Distrikt

It's hard out here for a mainstream rock band.

On a national and even international level, Regina's music reputation largely rests on the shoulders of underground or indie acts like metal monsters Into Eternity or the Icarus-like dance-punkers Despistado who flamed out on the verge of indie rock stardom. Hip hop acts like Def 3 and Tallisman have raised the city's profile in rap circles. Counterintuitive though it may be, mainstream rock acts seemingly have a much tougher row to hoe in the Queen City.

No one knows this better than local rockers Stillseed. With their aggressive, yet melodic, brand of hard rock, the five members of Stillseed are in relatively uncharted territory for the Regina music scene.

"We were lucky enough to come up through the metal scene," says rhythm guitarist Dustin Lemire. "But we don't totally fit in there. I mean, we can play a show with bands like Into Eternity or Dirtbred, but we don't really sound anything like them."

Stillseed, which consists of Lemire, his brothers J.D. (bass) and Denys (lead guitar), drummer James Stamm, and singer Nick Hennink, released their debut album Reborn last August.

After an appearance earlier this year in the finals of the Extreme Band Slam at Casino Regina (where Stillseed lost out to Holler), Lemire says the band has managed to crack one of the toughest nuts in the rock game -- commercial radio.

"The Wolf played 'Solitude' on their New at Nine a few weeks ago," says Lemire. "And since then, they've been playing it every Saturday on Radio Active. We really had to create a demand for our music."

Using e-mail and the popular Web site Myspace.com, Stillseed rallied its fanbase (Stillseed's Myspace page lists an impressive 1176 "friends") to lobby the radio station with phone calls and e-mails requesting the song.

"The biggest thing, it seems like, is you have to be able to show that you have fans and that people want to hear you," says Lemire.

Lemire counts Friday night's headlining show at The Distrikt as another feather in the band's cap.

"This really cements us as an established act in town," he says. "There aren't a lot of opportunities for bands who play radio rock to play. There aren't even that many bands in town who play that kind of thing. You've mostly got your Into Eternity or Ghosts of Modern Man type of bands who have that underground fanbase."

Stillseed makes no bones and doesn't apologize for trying to attract fans outside the niche genres that make up Regina's music scene.

"There's a common goal we've had ever since we started this version of the band a little over two years ago," Lemire says. "We wanna make it big."

The Leader-Post (Regina) 2006

Not all of the quotes are exactly what I said, but it's pretty well written anyway, I'm happy with it.  And there's a monstrous picture in there too.  afro

i don't know GOMM's music, i think even though we're heavier, we are fairly radio friendly with our melody and vocals.

dude, i've tried to go and see GOMM like,... 8 or 9 times now i'm sure.  something always happens, they're like the band i'm destined never to see.  let me know when their next show is.

Like I says, I don't know any of their music, so I can't really say who's heavier.  I really don't think spud could either, all told.  Only thing I wonder is that if they're "heavier", why don't they get on any metal bills?  preference?

I'll let you guys know when the next GOMM show is.
I often wonder why they don't play metal shows sometimes.
They always end up lumped in with post-punk bands & have been labelled so, as a result.
Personally, I don't get that from them, although they're nowhere near being a straight up metal band either.
One thing is for certain ... they are  pretty fuckin' heavy, in no traditional way.
Bah ... just come to the next show & see for yourselves.
Now ... back on topic:
So ... uh ... how about that Stillseed ?
