but it was rod torkulson
Rod's last name could be written Torfason, Torfasson, Torfeson, Torfessen or Torfesson, actual Scandinavian names (usually Icelandic) and the name used in the sketch, though his name is clearly spelled on the bass drum as Rod Torfulson. It is commonly misspelled 'Torkelson'.

I happen to play in a band which has a member with the incorrect genitalia to legally play in a band, so we try to downplay the fact that she is a "she"...

People are giving way too much of a shit about gender in bands these days.... if you slay at your instrument... you slay, plain and simple, gender has and never will have anything to do with your abilities in music. The same goes for bein super shitty, it is bound to no single gender. If you plan on using the gender card as a gimmick, then please stop playing music, you are giving the people who are trying to write genuine "slay your ass" music a bad name.

How about everyone who plays in a band is a MUSICIAN, no gender specifications? Stop furthering the imaginary gap between men and women by saying things like "female-fronted" and maybe people will stop giving a shit about something that truly doesn't matter... whether or not that guitar is covering a dick or a gyna.

I'm not harping on this band as I have never listened to them, the title just bugs the hell outta me.

htfu. If they want to excentuate the fact that they have a female singer, then all for em. People are gonna find out eventually...  I do agree that it doesn't matter whether a person is male or female in a band, but does it matter if they say they have a chick fronted band? How is that any different than a band saying they are black metal, or death metal? They are letting the listener know ahead of time what its gonna sound like, and what to expect. Do you think events like Femme Fatale fest shouldn't happen because it focus's on female musicians?

HTFU? I don't speak internet lingo.

I don't understand the need to say you have a female fronted band... I really don't see how that changes anything? Let people find out eventually, and when they do, hopefully it doesn't change there view of the band, because there is no reason it should. I hear bands all the time that have male/female vocalists that I had no idea wasn't the other.

It's like telling people "Hey if you already have a predisposed dislike of female fronted bands based on nothing other then the fact that it's a chick singing, then for sure don't check us out, you probably wont like it, even if it falls within a genre/sub-genre of music you enjoy" ?

I think there is a huge difference between a band calling itself a certain sub-genre of metal as opposed to announcing that one of the members is different in a way that was never a choice they could of made, they were born that way. That sort of thing is like saying that it would be somehow weird and worth mentioning that a black (insert any other ethnicity here) male/female plays Death Metal, like it would make any difference?

Like i said who gives a shit, if you are good you are good, musical talent is not bound by gender, and pointing out gender specifics within your band isn't helping to push the "equality" thing along.

It just seems these days that everyone wants to throw it in the face of the audience that "HEY!!, WE ARE BRINGING SOMETHING TO THE TABLE THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MUSIC, BUT YOU SHOULD PROBABLY LISTEN TO US ANYWAY BASED ON IT."

I fuckin hate Slipknot, but i sure as fuck hope people don't listen to them just because of the way they look, that's called a gimmick...

I have never heard of the Femme Fatale fest but I guess I'm all for it if people wanna keep that big ole gap between male and female alive. I'm not saying we shouldn't celebrate a girl playing an instrument, I'm just saying... why do we have to celebrate a girl playing an instrument?
Is it a miracle that she somehow managed to find the time between all that house cleaning and cooking to learn to play an instrument, or did she do what everyone else who puts there pants on 1 legs at a time? Sarcasm of course.

And I do appreciate the fact that you think "that's one damn good chick bass player" in regards to my band in another thread, she loves when people point out she's a girl.

That's not the point.

The singer of my band (being Samandriel) is a woman. Not the growler of my band, nor the screamer. The singer. Not only that, but she is classically trained, most people would call her "operatic" even. This has a very significant effect on how we sound. Call it fair warning, perhaps. If the thought of hearing a vocalist with a similar style of Tarja or Simone Simmons makes you want to hurl, then move along. My band and the way my band chooses to identify itself is in no way "furthering the imaginary gap between men and women", we're simply dropping a term so that people have an idea of what to expect. The singer of my band is very good, but I would never go as far as to say that she's better (or worse) than another vocalist based on her gender.

I'm not harping on your posts because I never bothered to read everything in them. If it bothers you that much, maybe starting a separate thread to discuss it would be appropriate? On a related note, this discussion is interesting and some of these comments got a laugh out of me. I'm really not trying to stoke a flame war here, but I'm a little bit frustrated that the topic about my band has some odd 60 posts and a staggering 3000 views when I'm betting maybe 100 of those (if that many) bothered to click on the myspace link and actually check us out. I was hoping that this topic would be helpful for connecting with some Sask-based metal fans, promoters and bands so that when we decide to play some shows out there, we wouldn't be going in totally blind. Jus' Sayin'.

Anyways, we threw a couple tracks from our upcoming EP “Awakening” on the youtubes for easy listening access, please check them out and let me know what you think! The disk will be released on friday, Oct. 15th and we'll be doing a string of Albertan shows to promote it. It's would be excellent if there was an interest from a Sask crowd so we could make it out to your guys' turf sooner than later.

Naw, I guess the problem with pointing out that she's a she is like saying "Hey, shes pretty good for a chick", instead of "hey that bass playing sounds pretty tasty". That suggests that she wouldn't be as good at bass as perhaps a dude and that you were surprised that she is, by the way she does slay most if not all of the local talent (Calgary) as far as bass players go....

I by no means am trying to stand up for any crazy feminist beliefs here, I'm pointing out some of the ridiculousness in music and the pre-conceptions most people have in regards to who can and cant play it. Imagine a one armed guy doing 2 handed tapping, now that would be somethin to talk about eh?

That's not the point.

Isn't that the gist of what i said:

"It's like telling people "Hey if you already have a predisposed dislike of female fronted bands based on nothing other then the fact that it's a chick singing, then for sure don't check us out, you probably wont like it, even if it falls within a genre/sub-genre of music you enjoy" ?"

Why would you specify that she is a singer? I'm not going to lie, vocals are the absolute last thing I listen to when it comes to music, but I can appreciate and enjoy vocalists who can do what they do well, and they are a plenty, even within the growling & screaming realm. Is your singer above those lowly types?

Why not go as far as bring attention to all the different aspects each members brings to the group as a whole, last time i checked the singer doesn't carry the band, and if they do then man that has to be a shitty band...

My POINT is that I think it's ridiculous to single out any member of a band as a description for what your band sounds like, who gives a shit about the rest of the band am I right? Wouldn't you like for people to know about your amazing Keytar skills, or maybe people just need "fair warning" about that too.

Hey I did the same thing for my band, nothin wrong with that. Jus' Sayin'.

Why is is that any band with a girl singer has to advertise themselves as "female fronted"?

It works both ways. Some people love female-fronted groups, and some people might check it out because it sounds interesting, or something they've never encountered. It's an easy tag to throw on it. I am the opposite in regards to vocalists, if a band has a vocalist I can't stand, there's a very good chance I won't bother listening to it much. However, I think we're both biased on this based on our genre preferences. I don't think that growlers are "lowly" types either, but I can't really hear huge differences between gutteral female and gutteral male vocals, whereas it's usually a very different story with clean vocalists. Hence why I pointed out that it is a huge part of our sound.

A singer doesn't carry the band, but (in our genre especially) a singer is typically the face of the band. It is more eye-catching to highlight your vocalist than the dude that plays keyboards. My band plays power metal, and we have a female singer. That's our sound in a very basic form. We could go into more details, and in our myspace bio we certainly would, but for a quick post? One phrase of description should be fine. That's simply how we choose to portray ourselves. I don't see the harm in that.

We've promoted our band on many websites and forums and this is the only topic we started where people brought this “issue” up. I've been keeping up with this topic since it was started. Took my membership request some time to go through. I had thought that the whole "female fronted" debate had blown over until I read your post, so I decided to reply to what seemed the most current, and because you seemed to be the most offended by it. If you (or anyone else) don't like me, my keytar, my band or the fact that we label ourselves as "female-fronted" then that's fine, but this argument has been done to death in regards to loads of bands, both big and small. Let us market ourselves how we want please, and we'll do the same for everyone else.

There is also a big difference between a female playing behind an instrument, and using their vocal chords too. Girls and guys have different voices. That fact is undisputable. If the girl in this band was the guitar player or drummer I don't think that they would be advertising as a "female drummed band." Having a girl instead of a guy singing makes a direct impact on the sound of the band, because of the type of vocals being done. I think everyone here knows that girls can play as good as guys on any instrument, and scream as well. But when it comes to singing, there is definitely a differentiation between the two.

and also towards that comment i made on the other thread... the bass is what really grabbed me in the vid i watched. I agree she fucking slays. so should my comment be disregarded just because i pointed out that it was a girl doing it? I don't care, i never said she's good for a girl, i said that is a great bass player who happens to be a girl. Or at least thats how I meant it.

Since when is mentioning "female fronted" a gimmick or "catch"... generally shit like "death grind" or "indie band from BC" is on posters its just to get attention.... some people dig bands more cuz a chick is in it (aka chick getting into metal)... relate and such, its not like o0o0o girls in the band for your eye fucking pleasure... i remember people baining over the chick from Bloodshoteye and it was like who cares shes no "Angela".....

Your not gaining or losing anything by mentioning a chick is in the band... unless shes hot they you should be like "bainer worthy female fronted band" then that'll getcha goin!!

I can't believe so many people made a big deal about Jeff labeling Samandriel as female fronted band. For the people that are THAT bothered by it and feel the need to endlessly complain, you are either very pretentious and conceited or have mental problems. If you simply disagree with that labeling, get over it. It is not a big deal. If you do not like groups with woman, good for you. I cannot believe the Metal community has resorted to this much inane bickering.
But on that note, for anyone who is not obtuse, please give Samandriel a listen. They are great and judge them upon their sound.

I can't believe this is still being discussed, on any level, at all.

This is a thread about Samandriel. There we go.

I didn't think it'll all end up like this
There's spiders on the wall and they stink of piss
Dead heads lying in the corner
Staring at me making me feel bad
I put my hands up to my eyes
But the holes in my palms let me find a way
to corner you

Everything I say is awesome

I need a man to fix it.
