Title: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on June 05, 2007, 03:34:53 PM
What have your latest purchases been for your instrument?

I just ordered a BBE Sonic Maximizer 362 to put in my rack and I am excited to see how it does with my amp.

My latest purchase has been my Mesa Dual Rec. My next purchase is going to be some sort of acoustic amp for my acoustic guitars.

Just bought my Jackson V and a line 6, but I hate the line 6, such a p.o.s. wanting to get into a new amp but dont know what to look in too, wanting to spend about 600, hoping for something with a good clean channel, and a heavy distortion channel, and hoping it has the warm creamy tone at the same time. Unlike this line 6, it sounds like its in a fucking echo chamber just cold and brutal.

Are you just looking for a head, or cab or combo?

Yeah I'd have to say that shying away from Line 6 amps is a great idea all together as they sound so digital and lifeless.

I would just like to clarify me taking a shit has more character than this amp...

I am thinking just a combo will be fine a 2x12 combo, 50-100 Watts, about 600-800 dollars...

I have been peaking at a B-52 but I have not heard much about them only what online tells me and that is not always the most reliable thing.

If you want to gig with it or anything, I'd say you should either save the money and go bigger, or else finance if the option's available to you.  I put together my half stack rig with $800 or so, I would imagine if you look at like a grand to 1500 you could get a good tube combo, or solid state if that's your preference.

My most recent purchase was the GT-8.  Unfortunately, I've found myself not spending much time playing since I bought it, so I'm selling it to my bro, who's going to get far more use from it than I.

No convincing needed, it was just a cash issue. This guitar is bang on everywhere.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: diamondbanger on June 16, 2007, 11:08:28 AM
Did Ron ever show you the Gibson accoustic he bought just before the Sawchyn?  What a piece of shit.  I can't believe that it cost him $3k.  They didn't even file down the nut properly, so it was out of tune at the first fret.  Maggie's $150 pawn shop special Yamaha played and sounded better.  I'm glad he got a good guitar after returning the Gibson.  It's terrible how manufacturers are ripping off people who actually believe that a brand name guitar is going to be perfect.
I feel sorry for the sucker who bought the guitar after it was returned.

ZVEX Box of Rock pedal - pretty fun little fucker, makes the clean channel sound like a STACK and the BOOST feature is awesome for solos as well.

I worked on a caparison guitar the other day, 1st one ive seen/played, it was a tombstone looking thing that came in a gatorskin coffin case complete with silk roses, i thought it was odd, its too bad the that model u couldent play passed the 15th fret (no cut) id like to play a double cut and see how they are.

My latest purchase would probably have to be my american strat, and yes gibsons are a brand name that are made for old players that like thier action a foot high and they should learn how to setup thier guitars to fit the rest of the worlds likes. And it dosent help that some L&M salesmen idiots just hang em on the wall cause they come "Setup" from the factory.

It ain't just the Gibson's with the fucked up action at L&M.  I've seen Strats & Jacksons setup with the strings so high that I can't imagine anybody playing it.
I don't know what you mean by "old players who like their action high" in regards to Gibsons.  Their flatter fretboard radius means that if the neck isn't fucked up (ie: rising tongue, backbow etc) you can lower the action to the point you just have to touch it lightly to fret it and then you can bend the piss out of it without getting that annoying Fender phenomenon of "fretting out"

what the hell is a dandy?

From wikipedia :

"A dandy[1] is a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance,....a dandy often strove to imitate an aristocratic style of life despite being of middle-class background....In the 21st century, the word "dandy" is a jocular, often sarcastic adjective meaning "fine" or "great", while "a dandy" refers to a well-groomed, well-dressed, and self-absorbed man."

It seems the word came about in the 1800's or so, which is why old man chester chose it i'm sure...  :-D

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Rivin on September 21, 2007, 12:29:34 PM
Oh By that definition im sure as shit not a dandy, i an not well groomed at all, and what i meant by "old players that like thier action high" i mean just that, the guitars come setup like that, where as jackson and ibanez usually come setup for shred, thats just how they are, of coarse some do change through shipping though.

kudos to the guy getting a sawchyn those are really decent and i agree that they shine much better than any taylor or larivee.

However, i personally think the next step up from that is a Morgan. After playing several morgan's side by side with taylors and larivees as well trying a few sawchyns, the Morgan is an unbeatable uniquely luthier masterpeice.

After many days of saving i hope to attain a 100% canadian sugar maple dreadnought in quilted finish; top back sides and neck. i will probably also line this bad boy with the latest non intrusive B-Band A series pickup so that i don't cut into the guitar and just change the end pin for an end jack with 9V battery. The plan is for a UST/AST combination for maximized pickup on percussive playing on the body as well as air tapping.

Boo to internal mikes!

just my two cents

in recent news of new gear i have recently attained a KORG Radias. quite a gem, and the same keyboard that the guy from dream theatre uses from what i hear. don't know of anyone else who uses this genious synth.

Funny thing you mentioned Morgan guitars. Before I bought the Sawchyn I  had both the Sawchyn here at my house and a Morgan. I had them both for almost 2 weeks. Hands down the Sawchyn won. The Morgan wasn't as open as the Sawchyn and there was also some structural problems with where the fretboard meets the guitar top.

Needless to say every guitar will have it's own characteristics. Maybe the Sawchin I had was better than the Morgan. Tough to say but I imagine somewhere there's a Morgan sounding better than a Sawchyn.

Regardless, how do you even know about these guitars?

BEN

Curious as to whether you were trying a morgan monroe as opposed to a true hand built david iannone morgan.

Sawchyn's were good but it's all about the wood. and a full maple morgan is freakin awesome!

on a side note i completed my paiste signature lineup, got a brand new 16" full for 180 cdn shipped off of ebay and a good used 18" fast for 200 cdn shipped.

sweet deals

Thanks to this little bad ass I'm never buying another pre-amp ever again. Much more than just a direct box, the SansAmp Bass Driver DI is capable of dialing up big vintage tube tones, bright modern slap sounds, gnarly distortions, and all in between. Three different outputs to drive power amps, recording desks, PA mixers (which I'm usuing it for), or simply enhance your current rig (might buy a pwr amp and cab later). Controls include Presence for definition and upper harmonic content; Blend to combine the proportion of direct signal and SansAmp circuitry; and active EQ specifically tuned for bass with 12dB of cut or boost.

The controls offer a broad range of traditional bass amp sounds, including such meaty styles as Bassman® and SVT®, as well as raunchy, crunchy overdriven sounds that would typically require a multitude of effects units.
PRESENCE controls the amount of definition and upper harmonic content.
DRIVE adjusts the overall gain structure and overdrive.
LEVEL regulates the XLR and effected 1/4" output levels.
BLEND allows you to mix the direct bass signal with SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry (which is particularly useful for basses equipped with piezo pickups).
BASS & TREBLE are active EQ controls, specifically tuned for bass guitar, that cut or boost +/- 12dB.
For studio and live applications, SansAmp Bass Driver DI is engineered with three outputs: an effected XLR, and effected 1/4", and a parallel, uneffected 1/4". The footswitch activates the Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry. Disengaging the circuitry enables you to use SansAmp Bass Driver DI as a standard active transparent direct box.
Sample style settings include Bassman®, SVT®, King's X, Slap, Reggae, Crimson. Settings are also included for Chapman Stick and Acoustic guitar.

This thing is really the cats ass. The SVT setting sounds deadly. Leave your volume pot cranked and it breaks up nice and tube like but back off your vol just a bit and it cleans right up with hardly any noticeable drop in out put....maybe a couple db.

I bought a new Ibanez SDGR 4 stringer today.
I just drove up to B-Sharp, walked in, found this bass & then left.
16 minutes total, between the moment I decided I'd go in there
& when I was leaving with my new toy.
I wanted it to match my G&L & although it isn't swamp ash,
they're still close enough to please my eyes.
I think they're purdy & I'm purdy excited to have a bass again.

To facilitate my desire to do some simple self-recording, I bought an Alesis IO2 usb interface, and a condenser mic.  So I basically spent the evening messing around with settings on an editing program called Ardour 2.3, which is a Linux multitrack recording program kind of like Cubase and whatnot.  Right now I'm in the process of updating my Linux kernel to a realtime kernel, which should allow me to achieve the low latencies required for recording with my computer.

Just ordered another Dean, should be here possibly around the middle of May or so. Damn things are worse than drugs.

I'm also hoping to pick up one of those Boss loop stations for writing shit, and a reverb pedal also in the not so distant future. Anyone have any recommendations on the reverb pedal?

I want $$$ to buy guitar stuffs.    Nice guitarZ.

Hey I'm pretty sure TJ was playing through a smaller practice amp at the Strength for Chris show.  It was a little Mesa of some sort, and it sounded phenomenal, especially for a little jam amp.  Anyone know what it was or how much something like that would run me?

It looked a bit like the amp Ben (wannabe) bought recently.  I didn't get a really good look at it though.   It looked like a Mesa Express 550 combo.

This one is 22 frets.  I didn't even bother looking at the high end Godins though.  I swear some of them have 50 different controls and switches.  It gets a bit insane, so I like the simplicity of this guitar.

It was the Expres combo 5:50 they run about 1200$  make sure that if you play it live you double check that gain knob before playing, shoulda been cranked down ablut 4 or 5 notches

I picked up one of the Tech21 SansAmp Bass Drivers Todd was talking about. I got the 3-channel version, which is cool cuz you can have a channel for slap/pop stuff and a channel for leads or whatever, which is a handy little option. But this is easily one of the best purchases I've made. It's a great way to get a really good saturated tube sound out of solid state or transvestite (preamp tube) amp. Like Todd said, you can easily run this little sucker right into a PA mixer without doing any damage to the horns, and the bass comes through clear as a bell. It almost eliminates the need for cabinets. I'm keeping my cabs, but it's almost doubled the output of my rig without even coming close to clipping the speakers.
I don't think I'd use this little guy if I had a tube amp, but if you want to get an Ampeg SVT sound without spending a couple thousand $$$, this is definitely the way to go.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Kevin on June 05, 2008, 09:35:07 PM
I got a little bonus monies from my work so I bought an ART 341 2-channel 15-band EQ.  I'm going to mess around with it in different configurations, but right now I'm trying it out predistortion by running my guitar to each channel through an A/B switch, and then running both channels into my amp.  I think I should be able to achieve quite a wide variety of tones that way.  Does anybody else have experience with EQs either pre-amp or in the effects loop?

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: FXD on June 07, 2008, 09:37:13 AM
they do work better in your loop because your pre amp pushes more signal then just your guitar. Try both ways, you'll see a way bigger difference in the loop.

So which arm and leg do you still have left?

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Ambo on August 20, 2008, 01:41:47 PM
I opted for losing both legs.  Guitars are pointless with only one arm.  I ordered the thing 2 months ago so PRS better hurry the hell up and make it for me.  Ordering a quilted top apparently threw a monkey wrench into the whole deal.

Title: New guitar and pedal
Post by: leif-thomas on September 07, 2008, 10:02:46 AM
Well I finally put away my XS cargo guitar I have been playing for over 2 years and bought a real guitar.

Went to b-sharp and picked up a BC Rich Kerry King Signature SS Warlock, and as a distortion pedal I picked up the Digitech Death Metal Distortion Pedal. Overall, I think the two sound really really great and I am happy with my purchase.

Now something I am asking is what would be a good amp to get? I dont NEED something gig worthy, but just something that sounds nice. any suggestions?

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: The Prairie Prophet on September 09, 2008, 10:43:25 AM
This all comes down to $$$.  As stated a million times everywhere I'm sure, it's all going to come down to personal preference.  If you only want to spend a hundred or 2 hunert dollars on something you can play on by yourself at home, just run to b-sharp/l&m/st john's and play on every little jam amp until you find what you like.

really i guess, same goes for any price range, you have to try it with YOUR gear first to see what you like.  Although the higher you get in $$$ the more places you'll want to go/the more amps you'll want to try.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: necrolobes on September 09, 2008, 10:52:27 AM
you can get a used line 6 spider (i think thats the practice amp) for under a couple hundred at most music stores and they sound really good. not very big but line 6 is great.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Jim on September 09, 2008, 11:14:36 AM
Agreed Line 6 shit is awesome.

And whatever you decide to get you can always trade in later for something better.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Sten on September 11, 2008, 08:17:53 PM
i have the line 6 spider iii 75 watt. it gets good volume and I love the distortion sound i can get out of it. and if you get the 75 watt or bigger it comes with tons of presets, some of which are really cool, but some are just pointless.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Drake on September 12, 2008, 07:24:25 AM
Yeah, the line 6 spider was a great amp to start on especially for what you get for the price. But after a while i started to get tired of the same sound. Also playing with other people it doesn't really cut through too easy, just cause it doesn't get that nice lower end. Also i was only using the 30 watt so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. Now I'm ready for something else as soon as i can decide what to move up to, most likely with tubes.

Getting myself one of these lovelies:
http://www.voxamps.com/us/customclassic/ac15cc/

Direct line into my RD-SX300 it sounds amazing. With the complementing saturation pedal my distortions come through a bit smoother but either way it's perfect for my sound. It may be a guitar amp but an afternoon of testing shows that this is one of the best things ever for a keyboardist in a metal band. The tremolo and reverb are fantastic and the fact that it comes with its own dedicated footswitch is really handy.

Always had a soft spot for vox haha.

I swooped into B Sharp and purchased this little bad boy.  Fuck me, what an amp!  I'm loving the clean channel, and the lead channel with gain & volume boost are all kinds of awesome.

I rented a Valveking while my amp is getting doctored...I was impressed as well.  For the price and the quality of amp, its a pretty damn good deal.  The only beef I have is the effects loop is on the front and there is a slight delay when you kick on the gain boost.  Other than that its a decent little amp.

What brand of tubes are in the one you picked up?

I haven't opened up the back to look yet.  I've heard that they are Ruby, but I can't verify that yet.  They've also installed these metal cylinders over the pre-amp tubes, so I can't see them until I take the covers off.
I've not noticed any delay with the gain boost, I'll watch for it.  I have noticed the reverb makes a short hiss when you switch channels, but I never use reverb or switch channels anyways.  I don't mind the FX loop in the front, I personally hate using a tiny flashlight or lighter to see the back panels onstage, so this might make things easier to hook up any gadgets I wanna use.

Psst, Jon, turn the cab around on it's wheels towards the stage lights...

I would have thought of that, but my Marshall didn't have casters, I was always too lazy to put them on.  Now I have wheels, I have choices.  I still think it's a better idea to have the loop in the front, I'm thinking the VK100 might be one of the very rare instances of FX loop in the front...

Greg, I was meaning to ask you...  Where did you get that Sonic Maximizer?  I don't even think I've found the stompbox version anywhere.

Not the same, but still damn comfortable! I must say, I like these mesh pads a gazillion times better than the rubber ones, especially for the kick pad... my Mapex kit can't live with me but this is the closest I'll get. Cymbal grabs, active rims, bell/bow/edge on the cymbal pads, really not giving much up in order to play through headphones. Acoustic kit + apartment = speedy eviction.

Absolutely, I'm pretty sure that thing's identical to Jamie's.  And it doesn't make noise in my house so keeps me happy too... :-D  Also he's found a way to set it up in his van and play it through his stereo in there.  Because he's awesome like that.  ???

Or if the deck has an auxiliary input you can run from the headphones out (1/8") on the drums with an 1/8" to RCA cord.

I saw dragonforce - recorded the show and have a good bootleg.  They rip those solos just fine live.  Mad props.  Dunno why when a band succeeds people feel the need to rip on em cause they're drawing large audiences.

They're a powermetal band with wicked solos.  They haven't changed - can argue maybe haven't 'evolved' but how do you evolve from what they are?  They are doomed to continuously write shit that sounds the same with the style they play.

I don't own an album nor will I ever but they both light up that guitar like very few people in this world can.

big muff pi and boss mega distortion.  the boss mega distortion is weak and bitch like, like all boss pedals but the big muff pi infront of it gives it some balls.  i'm running both of those through my kustom deep cab bass amp for some kylesa / baroness like tone.  only problem is it gets kinda noisy having the two together.

Guess I will show my purchases from last year...  Just snagged these pictures off the web but they are all the correct models, etc.

Bugera 333XL

ESP MH-1000

&

My favorite toy right now!

Godin A8 Mandolin

The A8 i have is the Natural Semi-Gloss finish shown above.  Because I've begun writing new Mandolin material in various untraditional tunings now (atleast in the last month) I plan to eventually get the CognacBurst High-Gloss as a secondary.  This Electric/Acoustic Mandolin could be louder unplugged (lack of soundholes) but the electronics are what puts this little guy at the top of it's class as far as pluggin it in and at a very good price.

The tunings for my very recent Mandolin material (not including my goof videos on facebook) are considerably lower than that of the standard Mandolin tuning.  This might not work as well for cutting through with a full live band but for solo material it sounds quite enjoyable.   :-D  Perhaps you might see some of my real material live within the next year.  I'd says it's an Experimental/Folk sound.

Don't think I could be happier with any other Mandolin.  Unless maybe a custom build but that doesn't balance well with my wallet.

Haha, never played any drunken Trollfest covers on it yet.  Couldn't imagine doing a Trollfest cover sober, just wouldn't seem right!  This is now on my to do list.

Switch them. An 85 in the bridge is secks.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Whatever the fuck I call myself these days on January 19, 2010, 12:22:23 AM
Yeah apparently an 85 in the bridge is supertits in a mahogany body like the MH-1000.

If you're using an amp with a somewhat loose and flubby low end however (duel/triple recs I'm looking in your direction) without some type of tube screamer in front, an 85 in the bridge is only going to exacerbate this cause it's ridicubassy.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on January 19, 2010, 06:37:27 AM
Yeah it is a bassy pickup I guess but I love thick low end distortion. However, the bassy sound is amazing with a clean tone, something an 81 in the bridge is terrible at doing.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: GnomeBeard on January 19, 2010, 10:38:40 AM
I grew up playing on my dad's old Seagull.  I'd like to get a new high end one.  I'll have to try out what Bsharp and Long & Mcquade got in right now.  I feel this guitar will suit my needs as the style of this Artist has got some pretty higher standard requirments

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on January 19, 2010, 10:43:02 AM
Man don't try it at Long and McQuade. They don't even set up their guitars for sale properly before putting them on the wall anymore. I went in and tried a Petrucci signature Music Man and it felt like complete garbage. Normally that guitar is amazing as I've tried it elsewhere but it just felt like pure shit for fags.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: GnomeBeard on January 19, 2010, 11:02:27 AM
Point taken, there are very few reasons I set foot in L&M.  I will happily purchase from B-Sharp as I always have and no doubt I'd be checking there to try em out first as well.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on January 19, 2010, 11:08:41 AM
Up until about 2-3 years ago L&M were good. They just don't seem to give a shit now and are more concerned with pushing large amounts of cheap gear out the door rather than actually having decent displays of their quality gear. This just goes for the guitar section though. I have no idea what their percussion section is like.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Whatever the fuck I call myself these days on January 19, 2010, 01:07:49 PM
Sounds like Mother's here in Stoon.

Yeah it is a bassy pickup I guess but I love thick low end distortion. However, the bassy sound is amazing with a clean tone, something an 81 in the bridge is terrible at doing.

Totally agree. I always flip over to the neck for cleans and smoother, jazzy sounding solos (got a 60 there).

That Seagull looks great! I can only imagine how well it plays and sounds. My first guitar was a Seagull S6 and, despite its flaws, I still love playing it to this day.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on January 19, 2010, 01:20:17 PM

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Whatever the fuck I call myself these days on January 19, 2010, 03:21:05 PM
It's been awhile since I was last there, but at that time they had so much shit jam packed into that place that you could barely walk around without knocking things over. And they're pretty gestapo about trying out gear at a decent volume (but that's not really their fault since the place is almost entirely open) and IIRC you can only rent used stuff.

L&M here is very spacious, well designed and has a sealed off rooms for amps, acoustics, percussion, pianos/strings, brass, and recording shite. You can also rent anything, even brand new stuff. Plus there are some really cool peeps working there.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on January 19, 2010, 06:05:56 PM

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: The Prairie Prophet on January 20, 2010, 11:47:35 AM
Yessir it's pretty good stuff.  I'm happy to have something to play on that isn't solid state.  The idea of when you turn it louder, everything turns louder.  I still don't know that it would be 100% the amp I'm looking for when I finally decide to get it together and purchase one, but it's still deadly beans.  Quality tone and when you adjust your mid/low/highs they actually make noticeable and useful differences.  I could see why you use a decimator on it as well, there's a little noise, but it's not really problematic on the crunch channel which I will be using mostly.

I will be using this to record if you don't mind it.

I absolutely love playing my Godin Mandolin.  Plugged in it sounds great!

I've been wanting a Mandola for a while now for my Folk styled music but I would likely go a bit bigger to an Octave Mandolin, they are larger than a Mandola but smaller than a Bouzouki.  I've already talked to the Twelfth Fret in Toronto about this guy...

apparently you are mostly wrong and it is more of a fuzz pedal with a volume boost built in . according to jake .

Ya, its not just a volume boost, its a fuzz pedal. Fucking amazing on bass. We used one on our first record. I've never heard such mean bass tone before. Its just so snarly and vicious. I thought the bass was going to jump out of the speakers and attack my like a hungry lion. Kinda puts shivers up and down your spine. The one we used was an original. I've read reviews that the reissue is slightly different from the original but I haven't heard them compared side by side, so who knows. Seems to me most of the guys who write those reviews nitpick over the stupidest things, so who could say. It is one of the most badass pedals I've ever heard though. Sweet buy man!

I didn't notice this until just now while doing some lurking.  The godin A8 mandolin is not cheap, I think I paid close to around $700 for that little critter.  It is loads of fun and quite unique for a Mandolin, I've tried out quite a few Mandolin's and I've enjoyed it the most.

Les Paul Traditional Goldtop.  Replaced the stock pickups with a JB and Jazz, and also replaced the tuners with locking Grovers.

Ibanez Tube Screamer.  Was Keeley modded before it was traded into L&M and subsequently purchased by me.  Sounds awesome, I though my Mark V couldn't sound better until I got this thing.

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Berner on December 08, 2010, 01:28:39 PM
What does that do to it exactly?

Title: Re: Latest Purchases
Post by: Ambo on December 08, 2010, 01:49:35 PM
It's an overdrive pedal so it generally is used to push the tubes harder to increase the level of gain.  I don't really use it to increase my gain that much since I get enough from my amp, I just like what it does to my tone.  I find it eliminates any bottom end flub you have without losing any of the balls and tightens things up.

very nice pc purchase.. i do like the rampages more then the sabertooth but im sure u saved some good cash goin that route.. (still, deadly mobo if u ask me!!)

those SSDs are gonna make u cream!! my boss is running the pc i want (i have a i7-980x collecting dust and 2 5970 vid cards that are in my workstation at work) i wanna buy a rampage but my current pc is just fine... i have had many offers for my free (ohh yeah almost 2 g's worth of shit) shwag..

im curious what ur using for case, power supply, ram and vid card?

and are u runnin legit 7 or cracked 7 (i have a siick cracked version that loads a "choose ur os" screen and lets u pic windows 7 ultimate or windows 7 ultimate XE and the xe is siiick when pounding games or running some mad programs... ie protools with reason and superior drummer rewires/vsi)

and if u need any apps (games, photoshop, office 2007, VSIs...etc) lemme know always glad to hook anyone up!! I got external so a borrow or a chill makes it all good!!

and smart call on OTV i know some people that avoid that place (i really dont know why... sure the sales service is meh.. but the prices are phenomenal!!) Im at OTV at least 4 times a week for work purchases or to chill out with bros.. hell iv even fixed a couple of pcs and sold some shit from time to time .. cash under the table FTW!!

id say hit up the raptors and reap the benefits... i would go standard speed HD down the road (cheap and knowing OTV a spring sale will be perfect time) ... but raptor esp if your recording is a siiick thing to own!!

Post by: Whatever the fuck I call myself these days on December 27, 2010, 01:57:29 PM
Yeah, I'm sure I'll be quite happy with it.  :-D This is for a strict recording PC (that will be in the same room as the amps n everything), so I'm having to do a balancing act between power and noise level.

I'm still using my old Sonata III case, just cause it's nice and quite. It's a TIGHT squeeze getting that x58 mobo in there, but she fits. For power, I'm still running the Coolmaster 700W silentpro that I had with my old set up. It would probably be a good idea to replace that with the 1000W version, but I've spent enough as it is.

For ram and the vid, I've got a pair of 2GB ddr2 transcend sticks and an ASUS 3650 silent (lol stoneage). I'm heading down to OTV in a bit here to grab a Patriot DDR3 6GB kit cause they're tested on an x58/i7 setup like I'll have. I'm planning on keeping the vid card though. It's just a recording PC, so I don't need uber boner graphix. Plus, I love that it has a heat sink instead of a fan.

While I'm their I'm going to grab Win 7 64 bit pro. I'm tryin to go legit with this setup. That said, I still have a couple cracked plugs, but I've drastically reduced the amount. Maybe I'm just stupid for doing that, I dunno.

Now I just have to find someone to buy my old ASUS P5N-MX, Intel C2D E8400, transcend ram sticks, and Corsair H50 setup.

Got a Peter Sawchyn Flamenco guitar a few months back.

Also been trying to refine my sound. Picked up 3 MXR pedals: Dyna Comp, Clean line boost and a chorus pedal. The live acoustic sound is always changing for me. I have yet to be satisfied with my tone. I play 2 Sawchyns, the other is a steel string. I'm switching guitars while the rig stays the same. It's a never ending battle. Oh yeah, got an Ernie Ball Jr. volume pedal. I like it.

I also picked up some recording stuff and an Alesis sr18. Hopefully going to use it for teaching.

PS: been teaching guitar at L&M since Oct. 09

Jackson Dinky DKMG - transparent black, black hardware, reverse headstock and floyd rose....love it for standard tuning thrashing!

Line 6 Spider IV - pretty impressive sound for a small practice amp, loaded with a shitload of presets and a loop feature for recording rhythms with playback so I can solo, solo, solo.

Line 6 FBV Shortboard MKII - cool pedalboard that can access pretty much everything in the Line 6 Spider IV, record loops and download upgrades.

So far loving all this new gear!

Well last summer I bought a Peavey Vypyr 60 watt hybrid modeling amp.  Digital modeling preamp with a 60 watt tube power section.  I really like this amp, just a basic 1 x 12 combo amp to replace an old head that I have that doesn't work anymore.

Recently I made a couple purchases improve my amp setup.  It is an open backed combo amp so I wasn't 100% pleased with the quality of the low end.  To rectify that I bought some basic electronic components and rewired my old cabinet from an 8 ohm 4 x 12 to function as a pair of 16 ohm 2x12s, which makes the cabinet compatible with the combo amp.  I was really happy with how that turned out, because I do like the quality of the sound from the cab and combo amp combined as opposed to the combo amp on its own.

This weekend I also added a rackmount tuner to the setup.  I know it might seem like a really minor thing to some, but I really do appreciate having the built in metronome to run through the amp while I am playing.

I would really like to order an 8-string to add to my small-but-growing collection of guitars.  I've got my eye on an ltd sc-608b

So being the fuzz connoisseur I am I was getting completely jewed while using my wah... it was either capping my fuzz or squeeling like buttsy's mother.. so i was doing research and found the ultimate mod EVER!!!

Foxrox Wah Retrofit!!!

The Foxrox Wah Retrofit is a self-contained JFET buffer/amp circuit that gets installed into your Wah Wah pedal, giving it the ability to cut through any Fuzz Face or Fuzz Face clone. By essentially installing a "real" output section, the Wah Wah pedal becomes immune to the effects of loading, restoring range and depth to older, vintage Wah wah pedals without affecting their vintage value. Newer, high-end "boutique" wah pedals, such as Teese RMC pedals also benefit from this mod because they are based on the same, classic inductor-based circuit. Since it is a basic JFET audio buffer/amplifier, this circuit can also be added to effects pedals that need more output, as well as effects that need more drive at the input.

http://www.foxroxelectronics.com/Wah%20retrofit%201.html

A WAH THAT CAN HANDLE THE SUPER FUZZ!!!! OMFG THIS IS MY HOLY GRAIL!!!

(ordered and in the mail.. il make a before and after video)

It appears this thread has been slightly dead for a little while.

Just ordered an ESP Ltd H-1001FM to replace my MH-1000FR I sold.

I absolutely loved the MH-1000 but I've come to the conclusion of never wanting a guitar with a floyd rose again.  The H-1001FM is virtually the same guitar with exception of the bridge and headstock.  I also prefer the flamed maple top over the quilted on the MH.

Stoked for new toy!

I picked up a Pearl Jazz Rock Pro drum kit last week.  I was looking for something to use as a second kit for home and came across this vintage beauty by luck.  It's all original from 1975, right down to the drum key.  I'm gonna take it apart and clean it up...probably update a few parts and turn it into a bit of a hot rod kit.  Here's the original catalogue picture from 1975:

The UPS guy dropped this off at my door last night.  14x5.5 Pearl Free Floating snare in Natural Maple finish.  Looks just like this but mine has the older gold badge on the drum.
