Title: Original Motion Picture Soundtracks / Scores
Post by: Vioplasm on March 29, 2009, 08:51:45 AM
I was just trying to dig-up some good Movie Scores tracks here and there and was wondering if anyone knows of any ...

usually i record the end credits of movies if i find something i like, or during movies, buy or d/l the soundtracks, whatever ... these are some of the ones i like:

Army Of Darkness
Alien 1
Aliens
T2: Judgement Day
various Horror Movies (1970-1997 mostly)
Grindhouse: Planet Terror
Legend
Conan The Destroyer
various Sci-Fi Movies

some other Fantasy movies but not much (no lotr) epic ones (they all sound the same 2)
Historical / Action films

Scott Hull recently put out an album called Requiem that is all soundtrack-style music. Kinda like a soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist.
It's pretty neat, not my kinda thing, but you might like it.

I honestly find that list offensive but here are some suggestions not "various sci-fi"

Band of Brothers (HBO Miniseries)
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Sweeney Todd
Pan's Labyrinth
Pearl Harbor
The Golden Compass (The only redeeming quality of this film was its score otherwise I would much rather read the book)
Across the Universe

Johhny Depp movies tend to have great music, usually because they involve Danny Elfman as the composer. Pirates was good, but repetitive. There's also a lot to be heard in the independent film genres. Most movies by the Coen Brothers usually have good music as well.

If you're one for the moderately budgeted horror film soundtracks I recommend you look into Alan Silvestri's work. He's quite prolific in Hollywood as well as independent film. He did the music for the two Predator movies.

Also, don't forget the big three: John Williams, Howard Shore, and Hans Zimmer. There's a reason they win Academy Awards for their work.

Android Apocalypse. Whoever did the music for that is some kind of genius. And Joey Lawrence gives a performance for the ages as an android who develops feelings. Truly a high water mark in modern cinema.

thanks man this is what i was looking for, as for the list it was just a shitty list to a good idea, i have alot of Williams, Shore, Zimmer, Elfman and Silvestri already, this is just something im expanding on ...

Yeah I would've thought that through before listing a pile of vintage horror flicks and "various sci-fi." lol
Movie music is highly underrated to begin with though so good idea for a thread either way.

Actually, what was a great horror/drama movie and also had a good soundtrack was Interview with a Vampire. Horror with good music does exist! Music by Elliot Goldenthal (Winner, Academy Award for Best Original Score; Frida and three other nominations. One for Interview).

I enjoy the music for the movie Surveillance. It's a creepy thriller directed by Jennifer Lynch, with an executive producer credit by David Lynch. Whoever did the music for that show is some sort of red-headed genius. It's gotten some pretty good reviews:

Ray Bennett, Hollywood Reporter
"The film looks great, with cinematographer Peter Wunstorf using different stock and inventive angles to good effect while Todd Bryanton's score helps maintain a constant undercurrent of dread."

Harvey Karten – Member: NY Film Critics Online
“…the scenes of violent actions are tense, nicely photographed by Peter Wunstof with appropriately scary music by Todd Bryanton.”

Michael Gingold - Fangoria
“…the eerie sound design and score by Rob and Todd Bryanton respectively contribute to the mood of impending and arriving doom that Lynch sustains for most of the running time.”

John Fallon –Arrow in the head movie reviews
“We get a chilling score, novel sound design and a powerful use of music.”

Jonathan Crocker – Total film reviews
“Twisted with black comedy, off-kilter performances, unsettling sound design and jolts of violence.”

Wendy Ide – The Times online
“…nicely ominous atmosphere with a sound design that looms up on you like a menacing shadow in a dark alleyway.”

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

Title: Re: Original Motion Picture Soundtracks / Scores
Post by: Toddureself on August 19, 2009, 01:23:22 PM
Nothing wrong with that. I remember when I was 14 I walked into Records on Wheels and Rob Doherty was hanging out there. I didn't recognize him--in fact, I thought he worked there--so I asked him if they had the new Mortician CD. He said Mortician was overrated (true) and that I should buy Pericardium's Anthems of Anger instead. He said: "These guys are awesome. They're opening for Macabre at the Exchange." So I went to the show and I realized I'd been talking to the guy from Pericardium the whole time. And that's when I learned the value of shameless self promotion. THE MORE YOU KNOW!

At least, that's how I remember the story. Now I'll find out that Anthems wasn't released until after the Macabre show or something like that.

i enjoy the soundtrack/score from the movie The Fountain done by Clint Mansell. Very ethereal and ambient flowing, kinda post rock-ish at times...
